great penny stocks to buy

I want to invest my rebate check. I have no idea where to begin though!!?
I would prefer to buy into the regular stock market. Not penny stocks or anything, but real DOW stock. I just dont know what to choose or how to do great research.
Why not gold or silver bullion?
