Can you become a millionaire quickly by short selling a stock?
I want to start trading options as soon as I turn aged 18. I’ve read books on the subject and Short selling catches my eye. I also understand that it can be very, very risky compared with ordinary trading, i.e. Calls & Puts and I’ve read the risks involved with it. However. I want to use this method to try and become a millionaire. Is that possible to do that by short selloing stocks? Please give a good answer.

You are now discussing writing options instead of shorting stocks. the two have very different risk-reward profiles. Your odds of becoming a millionaire quickly by writing options is very low.

If you decide to trade options you can establish how much risk you are willing to take. Some strategies, such as selling naked calls, are extremely risky. Other strategies, such as conversions, are considered arbitrage strategies because of the extremely low risk involved.

Now you’re back to stocks instead of options. Yes it is possible but not likely.

Here are some thing to think about.
(1) When you open a short position your maximum profit is limited, but your maximum loss is not. It is not at all clear to me if you want to try to make money quickly why you would prefer short positions, where the maximum profit is limited, over long positions, where the maximum profit is unlimited.
(2) The long term trend of the stock market is always up, so if you short stocks you are fighting the long term trend.
(3) Options, on the other hand, are wasting assets so their value normally declines as time passes. That can make writing options attractive to those looking to make money slowly, but not to those who are looking to make money quickly.
(4) Remember that options are a “zero-sum game” which means that for every dollar one person makes on an option someone else losses a dollar on the same option. Your trades will only fill when there is someone willing to take the other side of the trade, and that person will almost certainly know more about options than you do.
(5) I strongly recommend you learn how to trade spreads prior to actually trading options. Read some good books about options.
